Text

"I doubt whether [the boatmen] did not expect that some supernatural event would occur to chastise the rashness of my proceedings, and vindicate the veracity of tradition. In this pious aspiration they were disappointed, for both they and I reached the shore together in perfect safety. Scarcely had they landed when, with many a vehement gesture, and in the loudest strain of utterance, they told the marvellous incidents of the voyage to their listening friends, who on their part gave ear with breathless attention to a fable so indescribably absurd, that the habitual domination of inbred, and inculcated superstition, could alone endure for it even a patient hearing."
