"As it had seemed to me, so [the lake serpent] in fact turned out; a rock, which, rising to the surface of the water, the breeze had exposed. I brought the boat close alongside, and stepped upon it with no other evil consequences, then, or since, to rebuke my temerity, than a partial wetting of my feet. The matter being now placed beyond question, I earnestly besought the boatman to follow me. But this they requested to be excused from; and as I was almost unknown to them, and consequently possessed no personal influence which might have counterbalanced their apprehensions, I desisted from the hopeless endeavour. In truth, the awe of their recent panic was upon the."
