Text

"It is said, that the passage into Purgatory was first found in [Saints Island] ; but it being near the shore, and a bridge from the main land into it, which gave the people free and ready access, this passage into Purgatory was stopped up, and another opened in the one now called Station Island ; by which means, it is said, the monks wisely gained two points, viz. the profit of a ferry-boat for wafting the pilgrims over the lake, and an opportunity of working farther upon the imaginations of people, and making them believe, that they were really going into another world."
