Text
"Two things were now clear to me - First, that the panic of these fellows [about the lake serpent] might be sincere; and secondly, that if it were, they had comforted themselves with the conclusion, that if the offended honour of the monster required a sacrifice, the heretic parson would undoubtedly be selected. I felt quite sure that such had been the process of induction adopted by my fellow reasoners; so, entertaining no fears, either that they would make a Jonas of me against my will, or that the Lake King desired my for an 'entremet,' I plied my art with so much diligence, that in a few minutes we were alongside the object of my companions' fear."
