"I had long experienced extreme anxiety to visit this celebrated mart of pardons and indulgences, and therefore gladly availed myself of an opportunity which presented itself during the course of this year; but unforeseen delays intervened to retard my arrival to the last day of the 'stations.' On that day, also, it had unfortunately rained for several hours, so that the visitants, already diminished to a few, were dispersed by the inclemency of the weather, and had all departed. The Priests, having no longer anything to prey on, were likewise fled. Tents struck - the travellers retiring - musicians marching off the field - a few straggling drunkards, beggars, and children, - were all that remained to tell what the Great Penitentiary had once been, and would be again."
