"The lakes [of the Parish of Templecarn] amount to 110, of which Lough Derg is the most extensive. This fine sheet of water contains 42 islands, spreads itself over 2,140 acres and lies embosomed in wild hills and bog. Its depth is stated to be 120 feet. In some parts of it dangerous sunken rocks are met with. Its islands are low, rocky, and usually covered with small shrubs. Their average height is 484 feet above the sea, the lough being 467 feet."
