Text
"The chapel was deserted, and the altar removed; nothing remained to commemorate the recent presence of a multitude, but an incredible quantity of rags, scattered here and there, in indescribable profusion, over the entire surface of the island; they seemed to have been town from the dress of the crowd, and testified with sanguinary fidelity what fearful lacerations the skins of the wearers must have undergone. The boatmen had withdrawn to gather the rags - bead-stringing being their episode, rag-gathering their vocation."
