Such a sight have I witnessed from Station Island on 2nd July, 1879, between 8 and 9 o'clock, as the sun was going down behind Croagh Breac. Its reflection in the lake looked like a massive pillar of gold, having its apex in Upper Lough Derg, and reaching down through the channel between Saints' Island and the mainland more than midway to Station Island. One might well imagine it to be the golden portal to some bright realm. The sight was one my companion had never before witnessed during his twenty-five years' connection with the place."</text>

And Our Lord appeared to him as he had done on other occasions and gave him the book of gospels and a staff, which they call the Staff of Jesus, as he gave it to his servant, and in his own life he testifies that that staff and that book are a sign that he is the apostle of Ireland. And afterwards Our Lord led him to a deserted place and showed him a very dark pit and Our Lord told him that he who would enter into it, confessed and penitent and pure of heart, would be free on that very day of all his sins and would see the torments of the wicked and the joys and glory of the good. This Our Lord said to Saint Patrick and then Our Lord departed from him and the good man was most joyous on account of what Our Lord had told him when he showed him the pit so that he could convert the people."</text>

The road from Bundoran to Pettigoe runs through a district of great natural beauty, and rich in legendary, historic, and poetic associations. By road or rail the journey is a pleasant one, but we should recommend the former : it affords more time and opportunity to observe and admire the various beauties of lake and river, plain and sea and mountain. The entire distance is only twenty miles to Pettigoe, and four more to the lake itself. For the first few miles, from Bundoran to Ballyshannon, the road passes through a fertile and gently undulating limestone plain between Lough Melvin and the sea, famous in our early history as Magh-Ceidne — the plain of the tribute — where the Nemedians paid their annual tribute of cattle, com, and children to their Fomorian conquerors. As we reached the crest of the hill overlooking Ballyshannon, the gray mist of an autumn morning was slowly lifting, but, after a few minutes, the sun came out in splendour, and revealed all the beauties of that smiling valley —
