<text>"Count Raymond, tortured in conscience for his crime, proceeded on pilgrimage to Lough Derg, in order to appease the wrath of heaven. The story graphically proceeds : — 'It was a beautiful evening in the autumn of 1397, and the flood of rich yellow light from the setting sun bathed the wooded shores of Lough Derg, tipping with gold the waves on its surface. At this time the naked hills, which now surround the lake, were covered with majestic woods of oak and beech,* and fringed with a thick copse of brushwood to the water's edge.

'The little island on which was situated St. Patrick's Purgatory, lay about a mile from the shore, resembling some dark spot in the midst of flowing silver.

* In a visit which the writer paid to Lough Derg, on the 4th September, 1877, he observed, on a portion of the mountain in the possession of a family named Gallagher, the stems and wide-spreading roots of two enormous fir trees, from above which the peaty surface had been cut. This is evidence that at a remote period, when our climate was much more temperate, large trees grew among these mountains, which are now so bare and barren."</text>

There your bleeding feet must cross
O'er the pools and rushes green ...
Not the long ascent is past,
Pause awhile to gather breath !
For the Lake is seen at last
Stretching wide and cold as death.
With a sadly murmuring sound
Those grey waters meet the shore
Where the wild and rocky ground,
Is with heath clumps sprinkled o'er.
Far above that dismal Lake
Heavily the vapours hung :
Nature for the sinner's sake
Morning shadows round them flung.
There in groups were hundreds kneeling
Keen remorse and anguish feeling,
Brooding o'er the awful story
Of St Patrick's Purgatory..."</text>

Only by water can anyone pass from the larger Island to the smaller by ferriage of a small boat. The larger Island is entirely surrounded by water and such is its authority and reverence amongst the natures that nobody dares injure another within the space of a day's journey from the water. But if someone has committed a theft against another and has reached the place where that Island is, and he who has suffered the theft comes to him, he dares not injure the thief, but would rather become his assistant in removing the stolen goods wherever the thief may wish. There is a church in this Island in which Canons serve God. Whoever wishes to enter the Purgatory will cross through this Island to the aforesaid small Island. But there is in that small Island a small Chapel, where old men were always dwelling living an anchoretic life, who were nourished on nothing but water mixed with milk and in the Lenten season they always fed on oaten bread containing a third part ashes."</text>

That lake is called Derg: situate in Ulster and almost rounded in shape and about a thousand paces long in the mid boundaries of Tirconnell, Tyrone and Fermanagh. It contains islands and two are celebrated. The Island of St Dabheoc is venerable by reason of his tomb. The other is infested by crowds of evil spirits and for that reason called the Islands of Demons. To this island Patrick pursued the evil spirits, to drive them from the whole boundaries of Ireland. Here an Angel showed him an obscure cave and said it was the entrance to Purgatory and confirmed that whosoever entered absolved by the Priest from his sins should obtain pardon and not be conquered by his enemies in this life and see the final doom that sinners are compelled to endure. This ditch Patrick erected with wall and gates. Near by the founded and committed a Church to the rule of Religious and gave them the keys of the cave. A half of the Island of Demons he abstracted from the evil spirits and gave to them. He himself often descended into Purgatory by that cave."</text>
