<text>Marked on the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map as a 'church in ruins', there is now no trace of the church above ground. In the surrounding graveyard (DG105-003003-), there are several grass-grown mounds. O'Connor (1879, 17) says that the church was erected 'towards the latter part of the 15th century' and measured 66ft × 22ft according to the remains visible when he visited the site. A ringed-cross (DG105-003002-) .76m in height and 0.27m in diameter seems to fit O'Connor's description of an 'ancient Celtic Cross' transferred from Saints Island in Lough Derg. An ancient roadway to the pilgrimage places at Lough Derg passes the site.

<text>Located on the NW side of a tower house (DG105-014001-) and associated with a settlement cluster (DG105-014002-). The lands of Termon McGrath were granted to James, son of Archbishop Myler McGrath in 1610 (Hill 1877, 183-4). In 1611 Carew records that the 'Archbishop of Cashill hath begune a prittie castle at Termon Magragh w'ch he entends speedily to finish, havinge his materials ready at the place wher he meanes to buyld a bawne and finish the castle' (Hunter 1975, 82). In the campaign of 1649-50 Termon McGrath Castle was bombarded by Cromwellian troops and the N wall of the tower-house destroyed; it has remained a ruin ever since (Rowan 1979, 453). The ruins comprise a tower-house (DG105-001-) and bawn (DG105-014003-) sited where the Waterfoot and Termon rivers enter Lough Erne. The bawn (DG105-014003-) is roughly L-shaped in plan, the maximum dimensions being c. 27m x 27m; it is enclosed by a wall of roughly-coursed blocks and split stone rubble laid in mortar, and abuts the NE and SW corners of the tower-house. It was protected by two circular two-storey towers at the NE and NW corners; these were entered from the bawn by lintelled doorways with drawbar holes. They were fitted with gun-loops on both levels. Only the lower courses of the SE corner of the bawn wall remain. The E wall is c. 3m-4m in height and preserves indications for seven gun-loops. There is a splayed opening at ground level at the N end of this wall; its function is unclear. At the S end of the wall, opposite the tower, the wall is off-set 2.1m above present ground level which together with a corbel-like projection of mortared stones indicates a possible wall-walk or super-structure in this area. There are traces of a shallow fosse outside the E and SE bawn wall. The SW section of bawn wall is represented by footings. The W wall c. 2.5m-3.5min height has five gun-loops and had a small contemporary building near its S end; no visible trace of the E extent of this structure survives. The foundations of the N wall remain with traces of a central gate. A road, c. 4.3m wide and delineated by rubble blocks, leads N from the gate for c. 100m.

<text> It is traditionally believed that a monastic settlement (DG0101-001001/005-) was founded on Saints Island in the fifth century by St. Patrick who installed Dabheoc as the first abbot. The original monastic settlement is believed to have been located on Saint's (formerly St. Dabheog's) Island. The chief concern of the monastery was to minister to the needs of the pilgrimages to the cave, known as St. Patrick's Purgatory, on nearby Station Island. Some sources suggest that the original cave had been located on Saint's Island and that the pilgrimage was later transferred to its present location (Leslie 1961, 9-10). The Lough Derg pilgrimage was famous throughout Europe in the middle ages and a large literature grew up around it (Curtayne 1962, 160-62). An ancient roadway to the pilgrimage site from the village of Pettigo passes Rathnacross ringfort (DG105-002-) and Templecarn old church and burial ground (DG105-003001/002/003-).

The roadway continues to a point on the SW shore of the lake where a wooden bridge (DG101-002-) connected it to Saint's Island. Natural boulders projecting from the lake may be the remains of the supports for this bridge.

The roadway was described in 1981 as 'This portion of the Ancient Road to Lough Derg skirts the shore. It is now in part a forestry road with forest bordering it along the S-SW' (SMR File 1981). This road appears to have been a pilgrims road connecting Saints Island on Lough Derg containing St Dabheoc's Monastery (DG0101-001005-) with the village of Pettigo located 8km to the SE. A wooden bridge (DG101-002-) depicted on the first edition of the OS 6-inch map as 'Ancient Wooden Br.' connected the roadway from the shore to Saints Island on Lough Derg. A second portion of this roadway located in the townland of Carn was described in 1981 as 'This part of the ancient roadway is now under afforestation with the exception of c. 150m adjoining the house marked on the O. S. map. Here there is a trackway c. 3m wide and bounded by a field wall on the South and a low wall c. 60cms high (and partly obscured by rising turf) on the Northern perimeter. The roadway then turned southwards (23B) on Map, and led via Carn Graveyard [DG105-003003] to Pettigo' (SMR File 1981). In 1879 this roadway was described as 'we have ample evidence to satisfy us that a substantial roadway led to this secluded retreat even during that remote period, when, as we know, the fame of the Purgatory attracted pilgrims form the most distant lands. Remains of this ancient causeway, called by O'Donovan a via strata, can still be distinctly discerned, and are marked upon the maps of the Ordnance Survey. At the present day the entire coourse of this road cannot be traced, owing to the fact that it has been disused for two or three hundred years during which period heath and peat have accumulated over where it led through the mountains; and, where its way along the western shore of the lake, the waves, even more effectively, have destroyed almost every vestige of it. Traces of this roadway can be clearly observed on the summit of Portneillinmore hill (which rises close to Saints Island), also in a few places along the shore of the lake, particularly at Portcreevy bay, where it quitted the shore of the lake, and led on through a mountain valley towards Templecarne and Pettigo. From the main route a branch line led off to where the present wooden bridge spans the Owenea river, and on by Tamlaght to the Termon Cross on Drumawark hill. At certain parts of this roadway, I have been informed, on the cutting away of the overlying surface of the peat, large stepping stones, arranged in regular order, have been brought to light, thus confirming the name by which O'Donovan terms it, viz., a via strata' (O'Connor 1879 62-3). </text>

<text>According to Margaret Stokes (1882), there was a 'Giant's Grave' at Carn. Her small-scale distribution map places it a short distance SE of Lough Derg. It is not known to what site she was referring, but it may have been the feature named 'St. Davog's Chair' on OS 6-inch sheet 101. This is in the townland of Carn. It has been described as consisting of a stone seat in front of a grave-like opening but may no longer survive (Lacy 1983, 282).

In the OS Memoir (1835) there is an annotated drawing of a feature named 'St. Deavog's Chair'. This is assigned to a townland named Seadavog Mountain, which, like the townland of Cam, adjoins the southern end of Lough Derg. This drawing shows a small, subrectangular, box-like feature apparently set into the ground. The illustration indicates that it was formed by four stones, one at each of the sides and ends. The recorded measurements show it to have been c. 0.75m long, 0.4m wide at one end, narrowing to 0.2m at the other, and 0.6m deep.

Apparently people knelt in this to pray, with feet to the broader end, knees to the narrower end and elbows resting on the sides. There may be two sites named 'St. D(e)avog's Chair' or simply confusion about location. The name assigned to the site links it to the famous pilgrimage centre on Lough Derg.

As the supposed 'Giant's Grave' referred to by Stokes cannot reliably be identified, its nature remains uncertain.

<text>It is traditionally believed that a monastic settlement was founded on the nearby Saint’s Island (formerly St. Dabheog's Island) in the fifth century by St. Patrick who installed Dabheoc as the first abbot (see DG101-001001-/002-/003-/004-/005-/006-/008-). The primary concern of the monastery was to minister to the needs of the pilgrimages to the ‘cave’, known as St. Patrick's Purgatory, on Station Island. Some sources suggest that the original cave had been located on Saint's Island and that the pilgrimage was later transferred to its present location (Leslie 1961, 9-10). The Lough Derg pilgrimage was famous throughout Europe in the middle ages and a large literature grew up around it (Curtayne 1976; Harbison 1991). Several unsuccessful attempts were made to quash the pilgrimage and include legislation, papal prohibitions, adverse propaganda and the destruction of physical structures. In 1494 a Dutch Augustinian wrote to Pope Alexander V pronouncing the site 'a sham'. The Pope subsequently ordered its closure (Harbison 1991,59). In 1497 the cave was supposedly demolished, as a 'fictitious thing', on St. Patrick's Day ... by authority of Pope Alexander VI (MacRitchie 1901, 85). However, the Annals of Ulster recorded for the year 1497 that the 'demolished' purgatory was not the real one prompting the suggestion that the Augustinian canons closed down a 'false' cave, thus conveniently allowing the pilgrimage to the original to continue (Harbison 1991, 59).

In 1632 the Protestant authorities decreed that all buildings on both Station Island and Saint's Island should be demolished and the masonry thrown into the lake because of the 'extremely abusive and superstitious' nature of the pilgrimage: this task was successfully executed by the Anglican Bishop of Clogher (Pinkerton 1857, 67-9). Despite the obliteration the pilgrimage survived and even flourished (Campbell 1789, 151), except for the subterranean purgatory element. This was replaced by an aboveground building, as indicated on the plan of the island published in 1666 (Carve 1666) and mentioned in subsequent written accounts. The pilgrimage was again closed down in the 1780s on the pretext of dangers that might befall pilgrims as a result of overcrowding (Harbison 1991, 60). Once more these measures foiled and the pilgrimage to St. Patrick's Purgatory continues to thrive into the 21st century.

The structure named ‘Caverna Purgatory’ on Carve’s 1666 map no longer exists as the entire island has been subject to continuous development and building activities over the past two centuries. The location indicated here can only be considered as indicative of its former presence on the island. Even the existing so-called penal beds cannot be considered of any great antiquity. Miscellaneous ecclesiastical remains on the island include a cross-shaft (DG101-004002-), the broken head of a cross (DG101-004003-) and a small font (DG101-004001-). <text>The following description is derived from Cody (2000). The ‘stone circle complex at Cashelenny, County Donegal, is sited on bog-grown upland some 10 km. north-east of Pettigo . . . . The site was known to Oliver Davies who conducted fieldwork in County Donegal in the 1940s and 1950s. In his notes in the topographical files in the National Museum of Ireland, Dublin, he identified it as a complex of stone circles and alignments and through his work it came to be included in the Archaeological Survey of County Donegal where it is briefly described (Lacy 1983, 71). Some years later Claire Foley of the Environment and Heritage Service, Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland, whose attention had been drawn to the site by Michael McSorley of Castlederg. County Tyrone, alerted my former colleague, Dr Sean Ó Nualláin, to its significance. In August 1991, accompanied by Mr McSorley, the writer and Dr Ó Nualláin visited the complex and in September of that year it was surveyed. The monument is exposed in a 30m. - 35m. wide strip of cut-away bog which extends for something in excess of 120m. in a north-easterly direction from the environs of an abandoned house. This turf-cutting is old work and there would not appear to be any local memory of it. The surface of the cut-away strip is approximately 1m. below that of the surrounding bog. As none of the stones of the monument rise more than 75cm. above the cut-away surface it is likely that they had been wholly enveloped before turf-cutting took place. There would still seem to be a 40cm. thickness of peat at the site, the surface of which is now under a lighlt growth of grass and heather.

The monument stands between 600 and 700 feet O.D. (183-213m.) on a gentle south-facing slope on the south-western spur of Crockarthur, which spans the boundary between Donegal and Tyrone. This hill is one of a series along a belt of hill and mountain country, lying between the Derg River to the north and the Termon River to the south, which stretches eastwards from Lough Derg in County Donegal almost to Drumquin in County Tyrone. Northwards from the monument the ground rises gently and just 50m. away drops sharply to a narrow valley which forms the north side of the spur. The outlook from the site is limited by relatively close horizons formed by hill-ridges except to the south. In the latter direction there is an extensive view across Lough Nageage, 0.6 km. away, and beyond it along the basin of the Termon River in the direction of Lower Lough Erne. The accompanying plan shows the 134 stones that were visible at the date of survey. Of the 134 only nine are 40cm. or more high, 101 stones are no more than 15cm. high and shout half of these scarcely rise clear of the cut-away surface. Many of the stones at the sire are clearly set on an end or edge and while the status of a considerable number of low stones must remain somewhat uncertain it is considered likely that the great majority are in situ. A very small number appear to be prostrate, as if they might have fallen or been uprooted, and these are shown in outine on the plan.

Four classically-sited features are identified. At the south-west there is a stone circle and some 5m. to the north-east, and slightly upslope, there is a larger sub-circular feature, possibly also a stone circle, in the interior of which there are set stones. Between the two circles there is a row of stones and at the north-eastern end of the complex there are a number of stones, perhaps another linear setting. The stone circle at the south-west, part of which is still enveloped in bog, is some 10m in diameter. None of the stones forming the circle rises more than 30cm. above the cut-away surface. For the most part there are gaps between the stones, though two stones at the south-west at the point it exits the bog are almost contiguous while the next two stones are set end to end but it is possible that this pair originally formed one stone. The second circle measures about 14m. across. An apparent irregularity in the perimeter at the north-west may be due to loss or concealment of stones. By way of contrast with the last, which apparently lacks any internal settings, low upright stones occupy the interior of this feature and it is likely that many more have been lost or are concealed by peat. Two perimeter stones at the south-east, marked A and B on the plan and 1.20m. apart, are the tallest not only of this feature but at the entire site. They are 70cm. and 75cm. high respectively and, in contrail to most of the stones that seem to form the perimeters of both circles, these are radially set. They might form an entrance feature. The row of stones between the two features already described is represented by ten stones. These form a slightly irregular line some 10m. long. It can be described, somewhat loosely, as running tangentially to the largo circle and were it extended further south-eastwards it would also form a tangent with the smaller circle. The fourth feature, at the north-eastern end of the complex is 2m. to 3m. from the larger circle. It may be a short row of stones, possibly doubled, though it is conceivable that the stones here are part of a circle now largely lost or still concealed.

The grouped arrangement of the features at the site the use of quite small stones, the occurrence of set stones in the interior of one of the circles and the combination of circles and rows identify the site as an example, perhaps the most westerly, of the mid-Ulster group of stone circle clusters of Beaghmore type which are centred on the plateau south of the Sperrin Mountains in County Tyrone (Davies 1939). The full extent of the complex and the degree of structural elaboration remain to be established at Cashelenny before detailed comparisons can be made between it and other examples of this geographically distinctive group of Bronze Age monuments.’
