The island on which Saint Patrick's Purgatory is now located happens to be the island farthest away from the mainland no matter from what point of the shore it is approached. This is the very island he would naturally choose. He always looked for the most inaccessible place in every district, like the top of Croagh Patrick, enough to daunt the most enthusiastic 'fans'! He had to make sure that he would be absolutely alone. The tradition that he visited this island is continuous since his time, universal in the Irish Church, and peculiarly circumstantial."</text>

About seventy years, was the reply; that is, that it had shewn its back frequently after the present fashion, but had not raised itself entirely out of the water since that period. To my next question, of what the monster had done on the occasion referred to, they said, after some hesitation, that he had swallowed up a very wicked man who had returned a blow, to a priest in the chapel, and late in the evening had gone alone in a boat upon the lake. I asked had the boat been found? 'Yes, to be sure it was,' rejoined both voices together; 'does your Reverence think the beast, or whatever it is,' (for they seemed frightened at having named the 'great unknown' so familiarly, and by the way not once turn their eyes in the direction where it lay.) 'Yes, to be sure, Sir; does your Reverence think it would bear spite against a boat of wood, when it had the man to punish?'"</text>

<text>"One thing is certain : this pilgrimage has done much during the most disastrous centuries of our history to keep alive in the hearts of the people the spirit of our holy faith and its characteristic practices. Our enemies themselves attest ‘how much the superstitions of popery are greatly upheld by the pretended sanctity of that place called St. Patrick's Purgatory, in the county Donegal.’ In the midst of a district peopled by the bigoted, transplanted Puritans, the plundered and persecuted pilgrims found a shrine where the poor friars taught them the lesson of. patient endurance at the foot of the cross, and poured into their breaking hearts the cordial of spiritual strength and vitality. And every priest in the neighbouring counties knows well from experience what lasting fruits of penance are to this day produced by a pilgrimage to the holy island. It is, in truth, a sacred spot, that barren rock, rising from dark waters, and surrounded by bleak and frowning hills. The rough stone is worn smooth by the bare knees of the generations of penitents who prayed and fasted there. Many a mile they travelled, poor, toil-worn, and foot-sore, to reach that lonely island. Many a bitter tear of penance was mingled with the waters of the lake. Many a weary vigil they passed in that ‘prison’ chapel or on those 'beds' of stone. Aye, and many a darkened soul got that, many a sinful, sorrow-laden heart found there abiding consolation. These thoughts thronged my mind as I left the shore sacred to solitude and penance ; and the poet's prayer rose unbidden to my lips : —

‘God of this Irish isle,
Blessed and old,
Bright in the morning smile

Is the lake's fold;
Here where thy saints have trod,

Here where they prayed,
Hear me ! O saying God !
May I be saved.'"</text>

I'm afraid that swiftly flying,
With a terror uncontrolled,
You would leave me: for my works
Are so shocking to unfold,
That to see them not, the sun
Wraps him round in mourning robes.
I am an abyss of crimes,
A wild sea that has no shore;
I am a broad map of guilt,
And the greatest sinner known.
Yes, in me, to tell it briefly
In one comprehensive word
(Here my breath doth almost fail me),
Luis Enius behold!
I come here this cave to enter,
If for sins so manifold
Aught can ever satisfy,
Let my penance thus atone
To the Bishop of Hibernia
I've confessed, and am absolved,
Who informed of my intention
With a gracious love consoled
All my fears, and unto thee
Sent these letters I unfold.

FIRST CANON. Do not in a single day
Take, my son, a step so bold,
For these things require precaution
More than can at once be told.
Stay here as our guest some days,
Then at leisure we can both
See about it and decide.

LUIS. No, my father, no, oh, no!
Never from the ground I'll rise,
Where here prostrate I am thrown,
Till you grant to me this good.
It was God that touched my soul,
And inspired me to come here;
Not a vain desire to know,
Not ambition to find out
Secrets God, perchance, withholds.
Do not baffle this intention,
For the call is heaven's alone.
Oh, my father! yield in pity,
With me in my griefs condole,
Give my sorrows consolation,
Heal the anguish of my soul.

FIRST CANON. Luis, you have not considered
what you ask of me; you know
Nothing of the infernal torments
You must bear: to undergo
These your strength is insufficient.
Many are there, more the woe!
Who go in, but few, alas!
Who return." (Act III, Scene VIII)</text>

<text>"And I at once departed from him and went to the aforesaid town and from there sent to king Ó Néill who was in the city of Armagh. He indeed sent me a safe conduct and one of his knights and a messenger to lead me to where they were. And the aforesaid archbishop came on the day fixed and brought with him a hundred men at arms armed in their manner to accompany me and left me an interpreter who was first cousin to John Talbot; and with the hundred men at arms I entered Irish territory where king Ó Néill reigned. And when I had ridden some five miles ahead, the said riders dared not go further because they are all great enemies; but they stayed on a hill and I took leave of them and went ahead.

And after I had gone about half a league, I found king Ó Néill's marshal with a good hundred men on horseback, likewise armed in their fashion, with whom I spoke. And leaving him I went to the king who received me well in their fashion and sent me a gift of food, that is to say beef because they neither eat bread nor drink wine, because they have none; but they drink water and the great lords drink milk for their nobility and some drink meat broth. Since their customs and manners are very strange to us, I shall recount for you as briefly as I can something of their conditions and manners, of what I saw of them with the king, with whom on my return journey I spent the feast of Christmas, despite the fact that passing when I was first with him I had not seen enough of them."</text>
