"As I descended towards the shore of the lake, I could see that the island was entirely covered with persons, and on the bank I found upwards of 200 pilgrims waiting to be ferried over. They were generally respectably dressed. Some were sitting, some lying on the grass ; some, more impatient, were standing close to the water, waiting the arrival of the ferry boat; and some, more impatient still, had been warmed into devotion by the distant view of the holy place, and were already on their knees. It appears that Protestants must have permission from the Prior to land on the island during the season of the pilgrimage, and as long as they remain the devotions are suspended."
