Text

"The two flank (?) companies of the 55th Regiment quartered here, set out on a very melancholy occasion, in order to dispossess people of the name of Johnston, etc, to the number of thirty who hold forcible possession and have kept it these two years of an island in Lough Derg for which they refused to pay rent. It is scarcely penetrable, and the possessors are said to have ammunition and provision for nine months. They have mounted swivels and have hauled all the neighbouring boats into the island. The party with the sheriff were obliged to carry boats almost 22 miles on as a bad a road as any in Ireland, and mean on the sheriff being refused admittance (which will certainly be the case) to commence a fire with four cannon with which Government has provided them. This morning the possession was to be attempted and tomorrow we shall hear the event. Mr Leslie of Glaslough is the landlord."
