"The rowers wished to return in a direct line to terra firma; but I insisted that they should take me to an island, about a quarter of a mile out of our course. They expressed an unwillingness to do so, which surprised me a good deal; but as they assigned no reason for it, my orders were peremptory, and obeyed. While they rowed, they continued speaking to each other in Irish, with extreme earnestness, and an appearance of alarm, I could not account for. I knew that the lake was by no means of dangerous navigation - that I had besides an excellent boat, and two stout fellows to manage her - that we were but a few hundred yards from the land, and that the little wind which blew, was favourable to our return."
