Text

"The pilgrims throng the shore opposite to the island, sometimes to the amount of many hundreds, awaiting their opportunity of transport, in the boats provided for their accommodation. When arrived on the island called Station Island, they instantly throw themselves upon their knees, and remain in that posture during some minutes, engaged in muttering prayers, performing meanwhile, divers crossings, beatings of the breast, tellings of beads, and other manual exercises, suitable to the popular worship."
