"The adventure of a group of five women pilgrims [in 1922] were typical of the times. Two of these were from Dublin, two from Cavan, and one from Sligo. The Prior applied to the Commander at Pettigo for permission for these pilgrims to pass through that town on their way back to their various destinations. He received no answer. The women eventually left the island, taking a north-eastern direction for their southern destinations. They were rowed across the lake to that part of the shore where county Tyrone abuts on it. They passed through Castlederg to touch the Derry railway like at Victoria Bridge, where they got a train to Enniskellen. One has to look at a map to appreciate the circular tour forced on these pilgrims by the fortunes of war."
