Text

"Suddenly the far-famed waters of Lough Derg appear close at hand. The pilgrim finds himself on the very landing-stage, and two great boats, each capable of carrying 150 to 100 passengers, are lying ready to ferry him across. To-day waiting-rooms and guest-rooms grace the little wharf, but they are of a very recent date, as is also the magnificent Basilica erected on Station Island at a cost of over £80,000, the contour of which imposes itself impressively upon the view. Indeed Station Island draws all eyes to it simultaneously, for it seems to be entirely covered by buildings. Such, too, is almost the case, for the tiny place is not quite one statute acre in extent. But as a matter of fact there are some rocky irregular spaces in the interior, while the Hospices and the Basilica are build on foundations of impregnable concrete sunk deep in the bed of the lake."
