"Upon our landing he pointed out the prior's temporary residence, being the first house on the left in the view, near to which are those occupied by his coadjutors. The first chapel near the landing is the ‘confessional:’ here it is that the pilgrims confess their sins, and have the amount of their penances fixed by the priest. Between this and the second chapel, or the ‘purgatory’ there are seven stations circles about twelve feet in diameter enclosed by low walls about eighteen inches high, in which there is generally a headstone extracted from some churchyard, in order to give greater solemnity to the place, and around each circle there is a narrow gravelled walk which the pilgrims have to traverse upon their bare knees. In most instances the ground is rocky and uneven, and the rough and projecting points render the operation still more painful. Each pilgrim has to go round each station as many times as may be fixed by the prior, some more, some less ; and when the whole seven stations have been made, they are then admissible to the sacred cross station, which is marked by the fluted shaft of what had been a very beautiful cross, but which has been broken by sacrilegious hands."

"These penitential austerities were in ancient times exceedingly rigorous. The station lasted for a period varying from nine to fifteen days. In later times it was reduced to six, and at present only continues for three days. The station begins on the 1st of July, and continues until the 15th of August. The average number on the island is from one to two hundred ; but towards the close of the station time there is often from four to five hundred. The station commences with a visit to the Blessed Sacrament in St. Patrick's Church. Then certain prayers are said at St. Patrick's and St. Bridget's Cross, after which the pilgrim makes the circuit of the church seven times, of the large penitential bed six times, and of the smaller ones three times each ; during these circuits, which are made on the bare knees, a certain number of Paters and Aves is said. The first night is spent entirely in the prison chapel, and each pilgrim makes his confession on the second day. The penitent ‘brings his fast to the island, otherwise he cannot begin this station on that day. The only food allowed is oatmeal bread, with the water of the lake, or a cup of black tea. No whiskey is permitted within three miles of Lough Derg. The spiritual exercises are conducted by three or four secular priests, who remain on the island during the station time and are called always ‘friars’ by the people."

"The ‘cave’ of Station Island was long ago filled up, and a neat belfry of cut stone is now erected on the spot. Peter Lombard describes from hearsay what that 'cave' or 'prison' was in his time (1620) : ‘A few paces’ to the north of the church is the cave — a narrow building roofed with stone which could contain twelve or at most fourteen persons kneeling two- and-two. There was a small window, near which those were placed who were bound to read the Breviary.’ ‘Ware marks the spot on his map and gives the dimensions of the cave, 16 ½ feet long by 2 feet 1 inch wide. ‘The walls,’ he says, ‘were of freestone, the roof of large flags covered over with green turf.’ It must be borne in mind that this was only an artificial ‘cave,’ constructed, when the ‘station’ was transferred to this island, in imitation of the genuine cave on Saints' Island, which was the real St. Patrick's Purgatory."

“A slur of wet feet; patter of rain on leaded windows; smells of bog water and damp clothing; the thousand voices responding to the incantations. At her right a young girl of about seventeen was uttering heartfelt responses. On her left an old man in his sixties gave them out loudly. On all sides, before her, behind her, the same passionate exchange of energy, while all she felt was a crust hardening about her heart, and she thought, in despair, ‘I have no more feeling than a stone!’ And she thought, looking about her, that tonight this vigil would go on for hour after hour until the dark, leaded windows coloured again in the morning night. She leaned her face in her palms and whispered. ‘O God, please let me out of myself!’ The waves of voices beat and rumbled in her ears as in an empty shell.”

“’Yerrah, but sure,’ the old woman cackled happily, ‘they say that fasting is good for the stomach.’
[Jenny] began to think of ‘they’.
They had thought all this up. They had seen how much could be done with simple prayers. For when she began to tot up the number of Paternosters and Aves that she must say she had to stop at the two thousandth. And these reiterated prayers must be said while walking on the stones, or kneeling in the mud, or standing upright with her two arms extended. This was the posture she disliked most. Every time she came to do it, her face to the lake, her arms spread, the queue listening to her renouncing her sins, she had to force herself to the posture and the words. The first time she did it, with the mist blowing into her eyes, her arms out like a crucifix, her lips said the words but her heart cursed herself for coming so unprepared, for coming at all. Before she had completed her first circuit – four times and around each one of six cells – one ankle and one toe was bleeding. She was then permitted to ask for the cup of black tea. She received it sullenly, as a prisoner might receive his bread and water.”

"Many pilgrims surveying the crowds during the night vigil promise themselves that, on their following night of freedom, they will look down from their cubicle windows at the fascination of the scene, when the people emerge and group themselves in the loggias. The many windows of the lighted Basilica shine like amber panels in the darkness and all around it is the glint and stir of water. It is like the setting of some superb operatic scene. But I never knew a pilgrim to realize this pleasant project. The fresh air that blows across the lake, bringing the Atlantic ozone from Donegal Bay, makes sleep on the second night and impervious and inescapable necessity when added to the fact that the average pilgrim has put in about forty hours without sleep."
