"Think of [Saint Patrick] located somewhere near Templecarne for several months and thus surrounded. The lake would certainly invite him with its promise of refuge and sanctuary. It was inevitable that he should escape to it. The island on which Saint Patrick's Purgatory is now located happens to be the island farthest away from the mainland no matter from what point of the shore it is approached. This is the very island he would naturally choose. He always looked for the most inaccessible place in every district, like the top of Croagh Patrick, enough to daunt the most enthusiastic 'fans'! He had to make sure that he would be absolutely alone. The tradition that he visited this island is continuous since his time, universal in the Irish Church, and peculiarly circumstantial."

"The Franciscans took up the charge of St. Patrick's Purgatory when it was the most persecuted and derided institution of the Irish Church. Fugitives themselves, they encouraged and assisted this pilgrimage when to do so meant incurring hourly danger of death. They carried it on amidst its material ruin, joining the people in an attempt to gather together for veneration the broken and scattered stones of its buildings. They were the mainstay of the pilgrimage for one hundred and fifty years, or five generations, from 1631 to 1781, out from their convent in Donegal, then ruined and abandoned, but from local glens and farmsteads where they found refuge. They were able to live on the island only during the last twenty years of that period."

"As a boat was being loaded with passengers at eleven o'clock, an elderly man arrived at the shore and urgently signaled to his son to come away with him. "Many a pilgrim who goes to the Island for the first time remarks that the most surprising feature of the place is its obscure familiarity. He finds that he cannot shake off the feeling that he has already seen it all, experienced it all. As he plods over the rough stones in bare feet this sense of a warm and friendly intimacy returns with renewed conviction. There is a satisfaction in that fast unrivaled by the most epicurean meal in memory. The very strangeness of the whole rite is like an old memory overlaid by time."

"Most pilgrims develop for this rocky island and its harsh routine an affection that really defies explanation. Again and again they return to it with a gaiety, an uplifting of the heart, a profound sense of relief, in short the very sentiments proper to homecoming after life-long exile. That which speaks to them at Lough Derg is race. In going there they are answering the call for blood."

"The adventure of a group of five women pilgrims [in 1922] were typical of the times. Two of these were from Dublin, two from Cavan, and one from Sligo. The Prior applied to the Commander at Pettigo for permission for these pilgrims to pass through that town on their way back to their various destinations. He received no answer. The women eventually left the island, taking a north-eastern direction for their southern destinations. They were rowed across the lake to that part of the shore where county Tyrone abuts on it. They passed through Castlederg to touch the Derry railway like at Victoria Bridge, where they got a train to Enniskellen. One has to look at a map to appreciate the circular tour forced on these pilgrims by the fortunes of war."

"Whether the pilgrim to St. Patrick's Purgatory knows it or not, he is a sort of Rip Van Winkle whose experience is reversed: he finds himself catapulted back from the twentieth century into the fifth. If he goes there for the first time, he is on a voyage of discovery in which he will gain experiential knowledge of the past, not merely in his mind but in his very body. The Patrician age endures on the island and fifteen hundred years are almost as though they had never been. Unrivaled peace and isolation give him complete freedom to savour this experience."

"The pilgrim then walks to St. Patrick's Cross, a poor but cherished relic made of rude iron and set on a very ancient stone column. It stands a few yards south of the church entrance. Kneeling before this, he recites one Pater, one Ave and the Creed. The shaft on which this iron cross is set is precious, for it was salvaged from the lake. It once formed part of an ancient cross that was broken up and flung into the water, probably at the destruction of 1632. The spiral tracery incised on this column and the three parallel bands forming the capital indicate probable ninth-century origin."

"The repetition of the baptismal vow [before St. Brigid's Cross] is a reaching back again towards baptismal innocence and is the usual ritual of retreats. But here in the special circumstances it takes on an entirely new meaning. Recited in the open, while facing the airy spaciousness of mountain, sky and water, the pilgrim has the impression of having reached some complete solitude, despite the fact that there is probably a queue of people awaiting their turn beside him."

The stone circles [of the Penitential Beds] are small. When this sanctuary was demolished in the seventeenth century the despoilers left only the rude foundation stones protruding from the soil. Over these the pilgrims walk to-day: they are stones not merely sharp, but frequently so steeply inclined on the slope that it is difficult to get a footing on them. When hundreds are making the exercise at the same time, fatigue is trebled in the cramped space. The pilgrims have to kneel as best they can on the jagged rocks; some of them (aged and excusable) rise by leaning heavily on the shoulders of others, who are still kneeling. To understand the possible misery of it, think of rainy conditions, frequent on the island, when the stones become doubly slippery and the whole slope acquires a slithery and greasy surface."
