"The boatmen also pointed out the rock on the margin of the lake, and within a few paces of the cave, bearing the mark of St. Patrick's knee where he prayed (and where the penitents always conclude the station), when he killed the great serpent who, my informant added, had followed him all the way from Croagh-Patrick. Here is the story taken from an old Irish MS. of the O'Clerighs and given by O'Connellan in the notes to his translation of the Four Masters : — 'An extraordinary, monstrous serpent, called the ‘Caol,' was in the habit of thus passing its time. It came to Finnlough (Lough Derg) every morning, where it remained until night, and then proceeded to Gleann-na-Caoile near. Lough Erne, and there during the night it consumed a great deal of the produce of that locality until the religious champion of God, St. Patrick, came to Ireland, and, hearing of this monster, he 'went straight to Finnlough, where the serpent then was on an island in the lake, and immediately it took to the water and with its devouring mouth open it set all the lake in commotion .... and finally directed its course to the shore (of the island) and, opening its mouth, it cast forth its internal poisonous matter, like a shower of hailstones, over the lake, but chiefly towards the place where the saint and his clergy stood. The saint, however, having prayed to God, cast his crozier at the serpent which pierced its breast, so that it turned its back at him and its blood flowed so profusely that it turned all the water of the lake red. After that St. Patrick said that Finnlough (the fair lake)would be called Lough-Dearg (the red lake) thenceforth until the Day of Judgment.'"

"I well remember, while in early boyhood, to have frequently witnessed practices exceeding in folly and fraud those described here, on an island on the river Shannon, by many thousands, for purposes almost identical. Whether they existed or not then (A.D. 1818), I cannot pretend to affirm from personal observation, but I hear, and believe, that hey did - for to whom has the instructive lesson been given in vain, that so long as the Church of Rome finds dupes, so long will she countenance those arts which delude the reason, and enslave the consciousness of mankind?"

"Mingled with these devotees, is another body of the faithful, no less necessary to the due 'getting up' of the drama. These are composed of men, women, and children, afflicted with every species of disease, whose friends have brough them thither, or who have spontaneously come, in the hopes of cure, natural or supernatural. As the masses proceed, one or other of these imposters feels or feigns recovers. First, a shrill voice, pipingly announces the fact; organs more powerful next proclaim it; then shout the press within, A miracle! - A miracle! the outer crowd repeat, in a grander key; which, borne on the glassy surface of the lake, to the expectant multitude who line its shores, is again and again echoed, till the distant mountains receive it into their lonely caves, and give it back again in dying tones, to the ears of those who first published the monstrous fallacy. 'A miracle the woods, a miracle the floods, a miracle the vaulted roofs resound'."

“They knelt and prayed and rose and prayed
And circled the crosses and kissed the stones
Never looking away from the brimstone bitterness
To the little islands of Pan held in the crooked elbow of the lake,
They closed their eyes to Donegal and the white houses
On the slope of the northern hills
And these pilgrims of a western reason
Were not pursuing French-hot miracles
There were hundreds of them tripping one another
Upon the pilgrim way (Oh God of Truth
Keep him who tells this story straight,
Let no cheap insincerity shape his mouth).
These men and boys were not led there
By priests of Maynooth or stories of Italy or Spain
For this is the penance of the poor
Who knows what beauty hides in misery
As beggars, fools and fakirs know.”

"Down below [Dabheoc's Seat], Station Island rose up in imperial grandeur against its background of low hills. These were continually swept by shadows as the sun played hide-and-seek with the clouds, lighting up transient shades of delicate colour on the landscape. The green-domed Basilica and the buildings so tightly clustered around it might have been floating on some miracle raft. It was hard to believe that they had any anchorage. As unsubstantial and unreal as a mirage, one was afraid to look away lest they should vanish. One the distant hills, one could just discern the white gleam of some houses. Otherwise there was no trace of man, no roads, no sign of cultivation anywhere. There stood the Basilica proclaiming its message to an empty world. If Saint John, the Beloved Disciple, was granted visions on the Isle of Patmos, one could easily credit Dabheoc, too, with having had experience of some unrecorded apocalypse above the shores of Lough Derg."

Description
An account of the resource
"There are no holy wells in this district but there are two holy lakes called Lough Patrick and Lough Peter. These lakes are in the townland of Drumlougher and form the boundary between County Monaghan and County Armagh. St Patrick's stone is in a field joining Lough Patrick. On this stone there is the track of the ribs of St Patrick. It is said that once he jumped from a hill near by to catch a dragon that was out of the lake and which did a great deal of harm to the people. He slipped and fell on his side and left the track of his ribs in the stone. Many pilgrims go to this stone and also to the lake every year on the twenty ninth of June to perform 'rounds'. Cattle have been driven to the stone for it is supposed to have the power of curing certain diseases of both human beings and animals. One day St Patrick saw the snake out on the land and he froze the lake so that it could not get back into the water. Then he followed it to Lough Derg where he killed it. On the way all the houses they passed had their doors and windows closed, and the people were too afraid to look out. The people who visit this stone get nine little stones and throw each stone in turn across their right shoulder."

"Among all the prodigies and all the great miracles which happened at Loch Derg, it is told in particular in those latter times, when Hugh son of Manus O'Donnell was Lord of Tirconnell and Maurice son of Toirdhealbhach Magrath was Prior of Lough Derg that there were many pilgrims, both clerics and laymen, on the round of the Purgatory so that it was necessary on account of their number to bless the Church of Patrick's Bed and that people were put in it as if in one of the Caves, and that all those good men saw, both clerics and laymen, at midday twelve radiant crosses of golden hue, and one big and very wide Cross in front of them, floating evenly on the surface of the Lake round Purgatory Island, after the manner of a procession, before the group of pilgrims. And her are some of the pilgrims who remember the happening, the Canon who was called Niall Mac Tighearnain and he was present at the prodigy with Tadhg Buidhe Magrath. At the beginning Oh'Eilidhe Archbishop of Tuam made twice the round of Patrick's Purgatory, once for himself and once for the Pope and also the Mac Gafraigh Seamus Felim mac Gafraigh et coeteri plures."

"When we were within half a bow-shot of the said island of the Purgatory I saw a bird blacker than coal take flight ; it had not a single plume or feather on its back, save only four or five on each wing, and it was shaped like a heron, but rather larger. And when I saw and noticed it I thought it a great marvel, and I began to tremble, and my heart beat fast with fear, and my hair stood straight upon end so that I could scarcely smooth it down with my hands and make it lie flat. The canon knew quite well what it was, for he began to make the sign of the cross, and he signed himself four or five times. I asked him what it meant, and what this bird might be and the reason of the great fear which had come upon me. But he answered, trying to put me off. as if he did not wish to tell me, saying [in Latin] Nothing ! it's nothing ! don't ask questions ! don't ask questions ! and bidding me be of good cheer, and hope in God, and commend myself to Him. This made me the more suspicious, and I instantly and piteously besought him in God's name to tell me fully what this might be. Thereupon he replied that since I asked him in the Lord's name, and in such a manner, he could not refuse, and he began as follows
'At the time when our Lord shewed St. Patrick this Purgatory, after him, and one of his disciples called St. Nicholas, many went in, and most of them perished and came forth no more and were never heard of again. St. Patrick marveled greatly at this, and devoutly prayed to God with constant prayer and discipline, until he saw by the Holy Spirit that the reason of it was a wicked demon called Corna, who by his many and various temptations caused all the people to perish. Then St. Patrick made God heard his prayer [sic], and appeared to him in visible form in this place on the island, and said:-"Patrick, I have heard thy prayer," and shewed him the wicked bird, saying: "I have bound him in this shape and he shall never again have power to harm any man, and he shall retain this shape until the Day of Judgment, and he shall not have power to abide anywhere but on a stone or a withered tree. And when any Christian comes to this island he shall go forth therefrom and abide in some other island, but shall not be able to leave the lake."' Then the canon added that when the accursed bird Corna blows the horn with his beak, like a man, it is the sign of perdition for him who is about to enter Purgatory ; but, God be praised, he did not blow the horn for me, and I heard nothing. If I marveled do you likewise now marvel, when you hear these words, for to this hour my heart beats when I think of it."
