<text>"The road from the village of Petigo leading towards Lough Derg, runs along a river tumbling over rocks ; and then after proceeding for a time over a boggy valley, you ascend into a dreary and mountainous tract, extremely ugly in itself, but from which you have a fine view indeed of the greatest part of the lower lake of Lough Erne, with its many elevated islands, and all its hilly shores, green, wooded, and cultivated, with the interspersed houses of its gentry, and the comfortable cottages of its yeomanry — the finest yeomanry in Ireland : men living in comparative comfort, and having in their figures and bearing that elevation of character which a sense of loyalty and independence confers. I had at length, after travelling about three miles, arrived where the road was discontinued, and by the direction of my guide, ascended a mountain-path that brought me through a wretched village, and led to the top of a hill. Here my boy left me, and went to look for the man who was to ferry us to Purgatory, and on the ridge where I stood I had leisure to look around. To the south-west lay Lough Erne, with all its isles and cultivated shores ; to the north-west, Lough Derg, and truly never did I mark such a contrast. Lough Derg under my feet — the lake, the shores, the mountains, the accompaniments of all sorts presented the very landscape of desolation; its waters expanding in their highland solitude, amidst a wide waste of moors, without one green spot to refresh the eye, without a house or tree — all mournful in the brown hue of its far-stretching bogs, and the grey uniformity of its rocks ; the surrounding mountains even partook of the sombre character of the place ; their forms without grandeur, their ranges continuous and without elevation. The lake itself was certainly as fine as rocky shores and numerous islands could make it : but it was encompassed with such dreariness ; it was deformed so much by its purgatorial island ; the associations connected with it were of such a degrading character, that really the whole prospect before me struck my mind with a sense of painfulness, and I said to myself, 'I am already in purgatory.' A person who had never seen the picture that was now under my eye, who had read of a place consecrated by the devotion of ages, towards which the tide of human superstition had flowed for twelve centuries, might imagine that St. Patrick's Purgatory, secluded in its sacred island, would have all the venerable and gothic accompaniments of olden time : and its ivied towers and belfried steeples, its carved windows, and cloistered arches, its long dark aisles and fretted vaults, would have risen out of the water, rivalling Iona or Lindisfarn ; but nothing of the sort was to be seen. The island, about half a mile from the shore, presented nothing but a collection of hideous slated houses and cabins, which give you an idea that they were rather erected for the purposes of toll-houses or police stations than any thing else."</text>

<text>“…[A]s we rowed away from the island, I busied my mind with supposing the various characters of priests and friars that have sat in that window, observing the freights of human folly that were discharged from this little boat before their eyes. I fancied one, a man, who had from his infancy to manhood, year after year, taken up a new trammel of submissiveness to authority under the bearing-down system of Popery, until his intellect was enveloped amidst the cords that tied it up ; and there he sat, deluded and deluding— the slave of a talisman, which, if he had the courage to strike with one vigorous thought, would have shivered into atoms. Another I fancied as one who gloated on the lucre of the craft, and who sat in his window, counting the coming pilgrims—his avaricious heart beating quick with delight, as he measured the boatfuls of people coming over to add to the store of money he was collecting, and which was to him as a God;—and then I conceived another ecclesiastic sitting sadly in that casement ; every deep line in his countenance denoting the inward struggles and discontent that consumed him—sitting there as the abettor of a fraud that his soul revolted at—acting there a part in a drama that at one time forced him unfeignedly to laugh, and at another time to weep; and yet still without courage to break through the guards that custom, associations, and the frown of others drew around him—with the deep compunctions of the guilty—without the courage of a martyr—the Breviary he was forced to read—his abomination—the Bible, which some secret force impelled him to examine, his accuser, and at the same time convincer—thus a child of light walking in darkness, who would not mourn over, yes, and find excuses too for such a man, when in the gaudy vestments that covered his abased body and his suffering soul, he administered those rites he knew were idolatrous ; and took a part in those absurd and monstrous superstitions which he felt were as contrary to the simplicity of the Gospel, and the truth as it is in Jesus, as darkness is to the risen light.”</text>

LUIS. — POLONIA.

LUIS [aside]. True to my purpose on I go,
With footsteps firm and bosom brave,
Seeking for that mysterious cave
Wherein the pitying heavens will show
How I salvation there may gain,
By bearing in this life the Purgatorial pain.
[To POLONIA.]
Tell me, O holy woman! thou
Who in these wilds a home hast found,
A dweller in this mountain ground
Obedient to some sacred vow,
Which is the road to Patrick's cave,
Where penitential man his soul in life may save?

POLONIA. O, happy traveller! who here
Hast come so far in storm and shine,
Within this treasury divine
To feel and find salvation near,
Well can I guide thee on thy way,
Since 'tis for this alone amid these wilds I stray.

Seest thou this mountain?

LUIS. Ah! I see
My death in it.

POLONIA [aside]. My heart grows cold.
Ah! who is this that I behold?

LUIS [aside]. I cannot think it. Is it she?

POLONIA [aside]. 'Tis Luis, now I know.

LUIS [aside]. Perhaps illusion it may be
To baffle my intent, and lead
My erring feet astray. — [to POLONIA}. Proceed.

POLONIA [aside]. Say, can it be to conquer me
The common enemy doth send
This spectre here?

LUIS. You do not speak.

POLONIA. Attend.
This mighty mountain, rock bestrown,
Full well the dreaded secret knows;
But no one to its centre goes
By any path o'er land alone:
He who would see this wondrous cave
Must in a bark put forth and tempt the lake's dark wave.

[Aside.] I struggle with a wish to wreak
Revenge, which pity doth subdue.

LUIS [aside]. It doth my happiness renew
Once more to see and hear her speak.

POLONIA [aside]. Within me opposite thoughts contend.

LUIS [aside]. Ah, me! I die. — You do not speak.

POLONIA. Attend.
This darksome lake doth all surround
The lofty mountain's rugged base,
And so to reach the awful place
An easy passage may be found:
A sacred convent in the island stands,
Midway between the mountain and the sands.

Some pious priests inhabit there,
And for this task alone they live,
With loving zeal to freely give
The helping hand, the strengthening prayer —
Confession, and the Holy Mass,
And every needful help to all who thither pass.

Telling them what they first must do,
Before they dare presume to go,
Alive, within the realm of woe.—
[Aside.] Let not this enemy subdue
My soul, O Lord!" (Act III, Scene VII)</text>

<text>"Some French writer that I read when I was a boy, said that the desert went into the heart of the Jews in their wanderings and made them what they are. I cannot remember by what argument he proved them to be even yet the indestructible children of earth, but it may well be that the elements have their children. If we knew the Fire Worshippers better we might find that their centuries of pious observance have been rewarded, and that the fire has given them a little of its nature; and I am certain that the water, the water of the seas and of lakes and of mist and rain, has all but made the Irish after its image. Images form themselves in our minds perpetually as if they were reflected in some pool. We gave ourselves up in old times to mythology, and saw the Gods everywhere. We talked to them face to face, and the stories of that communion are so many that I think they outnumber all the like stories of all the rest of Europe. Even to-day our country people speak with the dead and with some who perhaps have never died as we understand death; and even our educated people pass without great difficulty into the condition of quiet that is the condition of vision. We can make our minds so like still water that beings gather about us that they may see, it may be, their own images, and so live for a moment with a clearer, perhaps even with a fiercer life because of our quiet. Did not the wise Porphyry think that all souls come to be born because of water, and that 'even the generation of images in the mind is from water'?" (p. 135)</text>

He urged the perfection of the human memory; I urged the imperfection of my own, and the acknowledged treachery of those men of genius and sound learning, and quoted the vulgar and common place proverb 'Vox audita perit, litera scripta manet.' He argued from the immutability of the tradition of the Church; I from the forgeries of the middle ages and strikingly from these about Lough Derg in particular; from the fact that no six persons will (or can) separately relate the same story in the same words, order, or detail, and from the difficulty with which a case of open robbery can be proved to the satisfaction of men of wisdom and acquaintance with the laws of nature and Society. <text>"Finn Mac Cooil and his heroes were one day walking on the strand of this Lough, and Fin's notice was attracted by a large bone out of which a white little maggot was peeping, which when he observed, he put his thumb of knowledge in his mouth and squeezed it, and then stood for a short time over the bone in an attitude of surprise. Conan, the only coward in his service, came up to him and asked why he looked so seriously at the bone of an old horse. Fin replied, 'If this bone were thrown into the lake, that little maggot would grow the size of a monster and do much injury.' Conan, the Stolid took up the bone in his hand and addressing the little maggot said: 'Me-thinks thou hast not got the germs of a big beast, pity that thou shouldest not get enough to drink' with this, he flings the bone up into the air with all his might, and it fell almost in the middle of the Lough, which was then styled Lough Finn from the brightness of its waters. Cursed fool said Fin to Conan thou shalt yet pay dearly for that rash deed. The Devil may care said Conan. With that they passed away from the mountains in pursuit of Red Deer. In 12 months after they passed by the margin of the same Lough, an lo! they beheld with astonishment a multiform monster with three humps on its back resembling three round hills (cors), rising above the water making towards them with amazing rapidity and roaring most hideously. The alarmed Fingalians took flight leaving Conan a fearful distance behind. He was overtaken by the monaster and swallowed, arms and all! Conan felt the scorching heat of his stomach, and feeling that it was a very gloomy lodging he bethought him of a plan by which, if he could not effect his escape, he might at least be revenged of the Monster to whose strength he contributed so much. He took his meadog or side knife and cut thro' the monster's stomach and side which caused him to make for the shore again and vomit the soldier out. In passing through the lake he bled so profusely that it seemed all blood, and it continued so for a long time, which induced Fin to change the name of Loch Finn to Loch Derg."</text>

<text>"'It is quite true,' said the Parson, 'that the legends of every locality take their tone from the character of the scenery, and that in so great a degree, that a person acquainted with the place would always distinguish a true legend from a fabrication. There would be an incongruity in the latter, — a want of character. It would be as if an artist, painting this landscape, thought fit to decorate these islands with elms or beeches. You would see at once, from the character of the scenery, that the thing could not be, — it would be out of character. In nine cases out of ten, the legend is simply an attempt made by an unlettered, but imaginative people, to account for natural appearances by supernatural agency ; therefore the natural appearances must exist.'

'I understand you,' said the Captain : 'you mean, for instance, that when the charitable monk is said to have crossed the Erne on a supernatural pathway, there must be a pathway of some sort to account for the legend.'

'Exactly so,' said the Parson. 'We, with our knowledge, can account for that pathway, by the very natural solution, that the debris washed down by the river in its furious passage from Belleek to Clogh-or must settle as soon as they have cleared the gorge, and are carried into stiller water ; and wherever they do settle there will be a ford. But, in earlier times, men were ignorant of the doctrines of specific gravity, and had recourse to the supernatural ; hence the Ballagh na Monach.' 'Or again, the other day, when the weather fell so calm at Lough Melvin, the Scholar, a stranger to the place, was struck at once with the resemblance of that reef of rocks to a ruined bridge. Had he seen the moon shining along it, the resemblance would have been stronger. Hence the legend. Had there been no such resemblance, there would have been no such legend : had that resemblance existed in this lake, the legend would have been of a darker and gloomier character.'"</text>

<text>"'This lake has its legends, I suppose?' said the Captain.

'Of course it has,' said the Parson ; 'and of course they take their tone from its scenery. I will tell you one that is peculiarly characteristic ; it is called "the March of the Dead Maguires." The lake is, as you see, of a rounder form than most lakes ; and whether it is from that cause, or whether there is anything peculiar in the shape of the hills that surround it, I do not know, but in certain winds there is a heavy roller of a wave that runs along its shores, and looks as if it were sweeping round and round the lake, setting all the reeds and bulrushes in motion, and dragging, as it were, the great beds of lake-weed after it.

'Now the legend is, that the great Maguire, of whom I told you last night, when he saw his island sunk, took it as a sign of Heaven's displeasure ; and giving up all thoughts of resistance, dispersed his clan, and retired with a few faithful followers to Lough Derg. His intention was to pass the remainder of his life in the religious seclusion of the Purgatory ; but whether he had been rejected by the church, or whether he had committed any particular crime, or whether a peculiar mode of purgation had been prescribed to him, I do not know, but, as he crossed the lake, a furious tempest arose, and he and his people were overwhelmed in the dark waters. And it is said that, from that time to this, whenever any misfortune threatens Ireland, the dead Maguire winds his ghostly bugle, and summons to his train not only those of his own clan who fell in the wars or perished afterwards in the horrible massacres of Cromwell, but also all those of his name who have died in arms against the Sassenagh from time immemorial ; and the whole train of spirits, thousands upon thousands, each in the dress and arms of its own century, march round and round the lake under its waters, heaping up the waves before them, and leaving traces of their past age in the broad stains of blood among the trampled weeds.'"</text>
