<dcterms:abstract>This chart, from an atlas by an unknown chartmaker probably working in Venice, shows an awareness of most of the eastern and southern coastlines of the British Isles stemming from voyages of Venetian galleys to the area since 1300. The west and northern-most coasts of Great Britain are relatively bare and Ireland incorporates legends about the purgatory of St Patrick with some realistic coastal information particularly along the west coast. Its purpose - to act as a guide for navigators and merchants - accounts for the way in which it depicts the British Isles, which is very different from that to be found in English-made maps or Ptolemaic maps of the period. </dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>This is a map of the British Isles. It is a wood cut and is by the Venetian Pietro Coppo. It was produced in Venice in 1528. It is a crude presentation and is unusual in that it is orientated with north-west at the top of the map. Scotland is separated from England by a tract of sea, a feature typical of portolan charts. Portolan charts were the invention of Italian mariners and were concerned with the depiction of coastlines for navigational purposes. These charts also typically show the coast lines as a series generalised curves and angular shapes, reminiscent of jig-saw pieces, a feature shown here. Also in common with portolan charts is the inclusion here of the Purgatory of St Patrick on the west side of Ireland. This was a fabled lake populated by many small islands. There were no subsequent issues of this map which was likely to have only been illustrative in function as Pietro Coppo had already produced superior larger scale maps of the British isles. </dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:description>This map of the British Isles is by Gerard De Jode</dcterms:description>
<dcterms:abstract>This map of the British Isles is by Gerard De Jode. It dates from 1570 and was published in Antwerp where De Jode was a well established map seller. De Jode and Abraham Ortelius were cartographic rivals and although several of De Jode's maps are superior to those by Ortelius, De Jode's map of the British Isles is disappointing. It is a direct copy of the outline of the British Isles shown by Gerard Mercator. An interesting difference is that De Jode omits the fictitious Lake Antre in Northern Island (is this same as Purgatory of St Patrick?) which was included by Mercator and Ortelius.
A large text panel contains descriptive text that originally accompanied the 1546 Lily map. George Lily's map of the British Isles was much copied and was significant as it was the first separately-printed map of the whole of the British Isles and included many more place names and distinct topographical features with a remarkably accurate depiction of Scotland.
This map is not the work of a skilled engraver, unlike some of those in De Jode's later atlas the Speculum Oris Terrarum which were engraved by the brothers Jan and Lucas van Deutecum. It is likely that this map of the British Isles was engraved by De Jode himself. </dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>This map of the British Isles dates from the period 1534-46 and is by an unknown draughtsman. The source of this map is thought to have been a map of around 1290 which also acted as a source for the Gough Map of 1360.

The cartographer has made significant advances however on this early source map; Ireland is included, shown as an egg shaped island with the fabled Purgatory of St Patrick, a large internal lake populated by many islands to the north west. The outline of Scotland is improved, the cartographer having rejected the contorted Ptolemaic shape of Scotland in favour of a roughly accurate outline. This improvement in the shape of Scotland is because the map is graduated for latitude and longitude (apparently from the Azores), It is the earliest surviving British map to be so. Ireland and Scotland are tinted yellow to distinguish them from England and Wales, but their inclusion on a map of 'England' reveals Henry VIII's hopes for expanding his kingdom. A date of around the late 1530s is probable as the map does not show the advances in knowledge of the coast of Scotland and Wales, notably the outline of the Bay of Cardigan, which was known at court after 1540.

It is possible that this map belonged to Henry VIII and was one of several known to have decorated the galleries of the various royal residences. It is the first known map to record 'hampton corte' raising the possibility that this is where it may have originally hung. </dcterms:abstract>
